Understanding and Using ClimbTech’s Removable Anchor Bolts

Hi, my name’s Martin Barnett. Today we’re going to talk about removable bolts or RBs.

This is a removable bolt from PMI that is half-inch and it has a minimum breaking strength of 12 kilonewtons. The largest size is three-quarter inch has a minimum breaking strength of 5,000 pounds or 22 kilonewtons. Depending on what you’re going to be doing or how you’re going to set up your anchor structure depends on what kind of size you want to be using. Also, depending on your drill bit and your battery power and everything related to the strength of your anchor that you’re actually going to be needed for the day.

 

So as said, they are a removable bolt. And as you can see here, I’ve already drilled a hole and you may ask, “Well, why do we need these initially?” Well, the simple answer is that we can use them like a bolt system and we don’t have to leave anything behind. So it’s a leave no trace anchor system.

It has several other advantages. The fact that we could be out here in the wilderness as we are, and we may not have any other rock or tree types to create an anchor, or we may not be able to use traditional rock climbing gear. So, here we realize as long as we have a rock type, which is going to be strong enough and suitable for our purpose, then it’s going to be ideal for an RB. If you’re going to be using them in concrete, then you can use them also in 3,000 PSI concrete.

They’re very simple to use. As you can see, with the sleeve, as you pull the lever down, the sleeve actually gets shorter and therefore they can go into the hole. You let go and they come out and increase a lock-in type system on the outside of the hole there. So to show you as they go in, it is recommended that you drill in about an inch and a half, but I tend to like two inches, two and a half inches or five or six centimeters. When they do go in, you want him to protrude in below the lip of a hole, just to make sure that it has gone in all the way. It will lock and therefore you can tighten it.

The ideal situation is that it’s going to be an outward pull, but you can rotate it and use them in a 360° fashion. The only thing you have to be careful of is that when you are pulling against it sheer, that you’re not going to bend the sheath or nick the sheath in any way. So they can be used in that fashion, but just be really careful if you’re going to pull 90 degrees.

They are very easy to come out. Sometimes you can just pull them out by pulling the trigger, but usually, you’re going to need some kind of hammer and metal device just to knock on it to help release that sleeve. So they can either come out like. And then now you have a hole, but you can very easily plug that up with dirt or really cover it up as though the hole was never there at all. It’s an ideal way to reduce the impact on the environment or just to create an anchor wherever you may be. They’re very popular in concrete environments and industries. And yeah, that’s about it really.
