Rope Access Pick-Off Rescue for Tower Workers
Rope Access Pick-Off Rescue for Tower Workers; the ability to perform an efficient, solo pick-off is critical. This scenario showcases a rope access-style pick-off, where a single rescuer, equipped with a Petzl ASAP and Petzl ID, performs a full rescue operation—ascending, anchoring, lifting the patient, and safely lowering to the ground.
Solo Rescuer Ascent and Anchoring
The operation begins with the rescuer ascending from the ground while end-carrying both ropes—main and belay. Upon reaching a position 6–10 feet above the victim, the rescuer establishes two independent anchors using pre-rigged anchor straps.
Maintaining 100% fall protection with Y-lanyards and a work-positioning device, the rescuer transitions onto rope using the Petzl ASAP and ID, removes their fall arrest and work positioning gear, and prepares to descend to the victim.
Lift and Transfer
Using a Petzl Jag System (a compact 4:1 haul system), the rescuer connects to the victim’s sternal D-ring, hauls the subject slightly to offload their original suspension system, and disconnects the victim from their fall arrest or work-positioning gear.
Once the victim is lifted and suspended on the rescuer’s system:
-
A secondary connection is made from rescuer to victim using a sling, prusik, or similar.
-
A friction carabiner is installed on the Petzl ID for controlled descent under load.
Descent and Disconnection
The rescuer initiates a controlled descent with the patient using the Petzl ID. A key element of this setup is the escape carabiner on the rescuer’s central D-ring, allowing for rapid disconnection if necessary—either on the ground or at height.
EMS can take over the patient upon landing, or if needed, the rescuer can hand off mid-structure while maintaining system integrity.
Key Benefits of the Rope Access Pick-Off System
-
One-person execution: Efficient for small teams or when immediate response is required.
-
End-carry rope management: Ideal for tall structures where rope length is limited.
-
Dual-function devices: Both Petzl ASAP and ID are rated for two-person loads and allow for clean transitions.
-
Compact haul system: The Petzl Jag provides simple, low-profile lifting capacity in a solo-rescue context.
