Petzl Rescue Solutions And Petzl Technical Institute – The Spin Pulley Series Part 3

Written By: Lance Piatt

Okay. We’re here with Davis County search and rescue. We have a training scenario and we have some… A little bit of snow today. We have an injured hiker that’s fallen over the edge of this cliff here. We’re going to send a rescuer over the edge on a two-tension rope system. We’re using a tripod as an artificial high redirect that will help us protect our ropes and help with the edge transition. We have the new Petzl Spin L1D and Spin L1 on our tripod to help with our redirect pulleys. And we’re going to see how that affects our overall operation. Here we have our system set up with two maestros on paw rigging plates. We can switch back and forth between haul and lower. We can switch from single tension to two tension.

As we lower, you can see the rope tracking through the Spin L1D working efficiently as our high redirect. Using a tripod (Arizona Vortex) and pulleys on a high redirect helps protect our ropes from the edges so we don’t get abrasion damage on our ropes. It also makes the whole system run a lot more efficiently because we’re reducing that friction on an edge. More importantly, it also helps make that edge transition a lot easier for our edge attendant with the letter. He’s going down to get the patient and we’ll be bringing him up shortly. Over here we have our Petzl Maestros purring smoothly. Again, those things are so efficient in these hall systems and they make our job a lot easier. Okay, it looks like our patient and rescuer are ready to come up. Let’s get our rope grabs up.

These Petzl Maestros have really simplified the way we set up our systems that makes it so much faster and easier to set up. It’s easier for new guys to remember how to do it and we can also transition really efficiently between haul and lower. It is way better than how we used to have to do it with prussiks and pulleys and rigging our two lines differently. And if we’re ever shorthanded, we can switch from a three to one like we’ve gotten out to a five to one very easily by just incorporating a twin pulley at the rope grab. A firefighter friend of mine down in Mississippi showed me, it’s called a Mississippi-Flippy.

You put a twin pulley on right here. We capture that. And then we transition over to the becket. And we have a five to one hall system that fast. Sometimes we don’t have a lot of room to work between our system and the edge. So we have to redirect our haul lines 90 degrees to work a haul field parallel to the edge. One way to do that is using a Spin L1 to just load our line and redirect off of our hall plate. And then we can run our haul field that way.

Okay. As you can see, the L1D is now moving as an efficient pulley in the up mode, and this really helps minimize friction at the edge. It helps with our edge attendant coming over the edge. Our high redirect makes it a whole lot simpler.

All right, as you saw, the spin pulleys have excellent applications and versatility in back-country rescue scenarios. Thanks to Davis County Sheriff’s search and rescue team for their help.

Peace on your Days
