Petzl Carabiner for Descenders

Proper Use of the Petzl Carabiner for Attaching Descenders with a Safety Gate

When using a descender like the Petzl I’D, RIG, or STOP with a safety gate, the carabiner plays a critical role in ensuring safety and proper functionality. Selecting the right carabiner and accessories, as well as following best practices for installation and use, minimizes risks associated with improper positioning and loading.

Key Issues and Risks

Under tension, the rope naturally holds the carabiner and device in the correct position. However, when the rope becomes slack, the device and carabiner can shift, leading to:

  • Poor Positioning: The carabiner may rotate, causing improper loading.
  • Cantilever Loading: Stress between the device and the harness attachment point can increase.
  • Rubbing or Damage: The locking sleeve or gate may rub against the harness, increasing wear or the risk of accidental unlocking.

Recommended Carabiner and Accessories

Petzl recommends using the Am’D carabiner with a CAPTIV positioning bar for attaching descenders with safety gates to the harness.

  • Am’D Carabiner:
The D-shaped asymmetry ensures even load distribution and reduces carabiner rotation. It has a sufficient capacity for attaching a single device, without requiring an overly large opening.
  • CAPTIV Positioning Bar:
This accessory enhances stability by holding the carabiner in the optimal position. It ensures:

    • The device remains fixed to the carabiner.
    • The carabiner stays properly oriented, minimizing risks associated with poor positioning.
    • The locking sleeve is positioned correctly, with the gate on the moving side-plate of the descender.

Recommendation on carabiner and accessories

– Use an Am’D carabiner and a CAPTIV bar

– Choose a locking system suited to your use

Choosing the Locking System

Select a locking system that matches the specific requirements of your work environment:

  • Auto-locking systems offer quick security but require regular checks to confirm they are fully locked.
  • Manual-locking systems provide flexibility but need intentional engagement.

Precautions for Safe Use

To ensure safety and optimal performance, adhere to these guidelines:

  1. Monitor Carabiner Orientation: Regularly verify that the carabiner is loaded on its major axis and properly positioned.
  2. Check Locking Mechanisms: Always ensure that the locking sleeve is completely closed after each use.
  3. Optimal Installation: Position the carabiner with the locking sleeve facing the user, avoiding interference with the structure or harness.
  4. Prevent Rubbing or Pressure: Minimize any pressure that could damage or unlock the sleeve or open the gate.
  5. Use Secondary Safety Systems: Always employ a backup belay system in addition to the primary progression system.

Why the Am’D with CAPTIV?

The combined use of the Am’D carabiner and CAPTIV positioning bar ensures a secure and efficient connection. It stabilizes the device, enhances load distribution, and reduces the likelihood of accidental unlocking or poor positioning.
