Roping and rigging equipment compatibility
Industrial round slings are normally used to connect a load or anchor to rigging equipment via shackles. There seems to be an increasing tendency to use these round slings for rope based activities with carabiners. Generally there is an awareness that their added bulk may have an impact on the strength of carabiners, but by how much?
In November 2014, 14 aluminium carabiners of differing shape were connected to a 2,000kg industrial round sling and placed in varying configurations on a slow-pull hydraulic test bed and pulled to destruction. The results were recorded and supplemented with four previous straight pull tests between two 10mm mallions.
The sling was basket-threaded through a shackle on a tension load cell and then the two free ends were clipped into the test carabiner. The other end of the carabiner was attached via 10mm mallion to the hydraulic pull cylinder.
