Managing Edge Friction With An Artificial High Directional

With light weight technical rescue there are many options for managing friction but not all are appropriate for remote, small team operations.
It should be possible to simplify systems if we get back to basics and consider the true purpose of high directionals: namely to manage edge friction. Too many operations seem to focus on managing a complex load over an edge and thus assume that directional must be high. This ‘load management’ is a secondary consideration. Here we look at a short gin pole/monopod and show how it can be used in a light weight yet fully capable twin rope system.
Another often overlooked option is removing the attendant from the system. Even if only for edge transitions this makes the whole task safer and much easier to operate.
