In this installment, I’d like to talk to all those who have the desire to teach and instruct. Doesn’t matter at this point whether you have the skills, learning the skills or are already using the skills. Desire is the framework for excellence… the quality of being outstanding or extremely good.
Rigging Lab Academy is the Proving Ground for a New Breed of Instructors. Sure, there are those who have done their time and have amazing history behind them, but what about their legacy? To the Masters… are you keeping the code of a building someone greater than you? Are you looking for apprentices to create a new standard of excellence in this world of mediocrity? This often missed opportunity is a key to a fruitful life… always giving forward for a better tomorrow.
It is an interesting note that while I have been in this industry for almost 25 years, I still feel like a newbie in many areas. Rescue Response Gear (rigging equipment dealership) has been a leading touch-point for many years. Through the early days, I learned from many artists and leaders in various disciplines of rigging…. be it training schools, manufacturing, coaching, consulting or even employees. Life lessons have always in front of me, and learning for me, is a priority. Master always learns more than the student… that is what make them Masters.
So in this new world of learning, On-Line education exposes people to all kinds of information, but it also opens up incredible opportunities for “young padawans” to begin the sojourn AND… it opens up amazing challenges for many who should be teaching and mentoring already; making their ceiling another’s floor. This is what Rigging Lab Academy is about. Changing the ceiling-floor paradigm and opening it up to a global audience. To be unafraid of sharing what you know with others. Don’t get me wrong though…. I am not asking anyone to give away their knowledge without putting something back.
An Apprentice works for free and study under a Master and contribute to his work. The University system has attempted to replace this process and the system is broke. Great news though… Accidental Apprenticeships. Life is an apprenticeship program, and must be done with purpose and a standard must be upheld. There are times when the apprentice essentially does everything except placing his mark on the project…. he never does though, because the Master comes in a puts his mark on the project signifying that it meets with his approval. See the mark is the important thing. It speaks of honor. The Master’s mark gives honor to the one who did the work and the apprentice who did the work gladly honors the Master in the work.
The Journeyman is the middle ground…. Honing his craft apart from the Master’s presence, but always honoring the work of the Master. The Journeyman goes from “place to place”, refining and purifying the craft. This means putting your work in front of the skeptics and naysayers. People who could be very critical of the work… but this is The Proving Ground. While always increasing your value, you still need to get past The Gatekeeper. You chose your Gatekeepers wisely; Honor and credibility… valuing the process along with the product.
Then the glorious day… Your Master says, well done and you receive the Stamp and you are The Master. Funny thing though… You will always live in the shadow of your Master, but his encouragement will always await you. Why? That is honor system and this what what Rigging Lab Academy is about. This too is part of the Proving Ground.
