What if I don’t know when the rope was purchased?

A: NFPA 1983, 1990 edition required for any life safety rope to have a tape in the core that runs the entire length of the rope with the following information; manufacturer, the standard that the rope was made to and the year and quarter of when the rope was produced.

You can cut off a foot or so of your rope unravel it. If there is no tape in the core, then the rope was either produced earlier than 1990 or is not a NFPA certified life safety rope.
