Petzl RAD System | Rapid Ascent / Descent - Ascent Mode

Occasional rope climbing with the I’D or Rig

The I’D or Rig can be used to ascend, for precise positioning or a short rope ascent.

When the handle is in “descent” mode, the rope slides freely in the up direction. The user need only move upward and take up slack as he goes to stay in tension on the rope.

Warning: when the handle is in “descent” mode, the user must continuously hold the brake side of the rope.

Simple technique:

Install a rope clamp and footloop on the rope above the I’D. Stand in the footloop to unweight the I’D while simultaneously pulling the brake side of the rope. Smoothly transfer your weight to the I’D, move the footloop up and repeat the maneuver.

With directional point on the rope clamp:

Install a rope clamp and footloop on the rope above the I’D. Pass the brake side of the ID’s rope through a directional point on the rope clamp (carabiner or pulley). Pull on this rope to haul yourself while simultaneously standing in the footloop. Climbing effort is reduced but progress per cycle is less than with the simple technique.
