In hybrid horizontal rescue systems, ground anchors play a critical role in maintaining tension, control, and safety. Whether you’re managing a skate block, a tracking line, or both, the way you rig from the ground determines how smooth and stable the evolution will be.

One of the more versatile setups is the Hybrid Rescue Ground Anchor, demonstrated here with a Harken Riggers Winch used for the skate block (escape lock) line and a Petzl I’D employed for the tracking line. This configuration allows for efficient control with minimal manpower and maximum flexibility.

Ground Anchor Components

Escape Lock Line – Tensioned with the Riggers Winch

  • The skate block line is tensioned using the Harken Riggers Winch, a compact and efficient hauling device perfect for small teams.

  • After taking up slack, the winch allows for controlled lowering via the drum, acting like a descent control device.

  • This method offers excellent adjustability when needing to reposition the rescue load.

Tracking Line – Hand-Tensioned with a Petzl I’D

  • On the tracking side, a Petzl I’D is used for hand tensioning. No mechanical advantage system was applied.

  • One team member can effectively tension the line and lock it off securely.

  • This minimalist setup saves time while still offering enough control for smooth package movement.

Key Considerations for Rigging

  • Maintain Angle Awareness: The team emphasizes keeping the top angle under 45 degrees. Once you move past this threshold, anchor forces begin to resemble those seen in horizontal highline systems, which require a more complex rigging approach.

  • Choose Tools Based on Team Size: While a Petzl ID or CMC MPD will do the job, the Harken winch offers a hauling advantage in solo or small-team situations, especially when lifting a victim directly off the structure.

Why It Works

This system is ideal for teams needing redundancy, control, and simplicity all in one. The skate block and tracking line work together to share the load and manage patient movement. With clear boundaries between systems and straightforward gear use, this hybrid ground anchor configuration can be deployed efficiently without sacrificing safety.

Summary of Benefits

  • ✅ Simple to rig and manage in the field

  • ✅ Effective with minimal team members

  • ✅ Versatile equipment options (winch, MPD, or ID)

  • ✅ Maintains clean separation between tracking and descent control

  • ✅ Reduces over-tensioning by leveraging direct hand tension or mechanical winch
