Last month, we visited the Petzl America facility in Salt Lake City Utah. It was here we met up with Steve Crandall. Steve is a full time firefighter with Salt Lake City Fire Department. Like many of “his kind”, he has a lot going on with the department and life as a whole. Rather than take up way to much space listing out “what and who” Steve is… Check out his bio at Heavy Rescue Training.
This module is one of 14 feature teaching modules listed in the Climber Rescue: Improvisation-The Mountain Minimalist.
Being a lifelong climber… Steve has accomplished a ton. He’ll forget more than I will ever know… Anyway, having Steve as part of Rigging Lab Academy has been a dream come true. Having known him for close to 10 years now, character and integrity for people is matched step for step with this ability to teach complex systems very simply. Thus, we invited Steve to share his thoughts on something near and dear to him… Climber Rescue: Improvisation-The Mountain Minimalist.
Much of the written content in this project can be found in his new book Rescue Rigging Concepts. Pick up a copy. The thing is huge!
We plan on releasing the course July or early August.
Improvised Rigging is a spontaneous event. It is done outside of the norm because the rescue has to, not because he wants to. Minimalist Rigging, on the other hand, is a planned event. The rescuer purposely brings a limited cache of lightweight equipment to save on room and weight. Safety factors are narrowed by design and on purchase all in an effort to streamline things. This course will cover vantage points for both areas.
Peace on your days!
