Bombproof Anchors | Anchor Considerations in Rope Rescue and Rigging

Written By: Lance Piatt

Excerpt from Anchor Considerations in Rope Rigging Systems Vol. 2 Segment 2

What is a bombproof anchor and what are some methods of rigging anchors? Bombproof anchors can hold it all… but does this principle apply in high directional anchors such as tripods, “A” frames, and gin poles? Questions of this nature are addressed in this video sequence.  Rarely is there a topic that generates more frustration than this one.

A bombproof anchor has one or both of these aspects to it:

  1. The structural support or inherent strength if it were to go would result in the entire system to collapse
  2. All anchor points are so large and substantial and failure is inconceivable, thereby making #1 a moot point.

In short, a bombproof anchor is really strong and will hold everything.  It will hold what you give it as long as you have separate attachment points for all independent systems.

  • A Mainline
  • A Belay line
  • TTRS

Check out the video below before making a fist with disagreement.

We do talk a bit about hanging your belay line with your mainline on artificial high directional such as an Arizona Vortex. Some might say we don’t do this.  Why not?  Check unlawful criticism at the door let the numbers and logic take over for a bit. Obviously this gets into an entirely different conversational direction.  It always gets back to the engineering and the design of the system as a whole as well as in part.  Human failure is part of “doubt” and thus nothing is deemed bomber if the entire system can’t connect to it (if needed), thus the argument simply falls apart here.  If one can’t do this, then it isn’t a bomber anchor, thus becoming a marginal anchor (of which we’ll discuss in a later article and video).

The way we address knots, MAs (Mechanical Advantages) and Anchors in these videos are more general and with a focus of the finer points that are many times overlooked. Our hopes are that the viewer walks away with an energized commitment to studying the “WHY” behind general rigging, and focus on an extremely clean approach and a dedication to practice and muscle memory. We will explore the finer points of these topics that are applicable to anyone who is called upon to rig.

Commitment to rigging as an art form is a true storyline. We are here to help you write the best script possible.

Peace on your Days

Lance
