In scenarios requiring an immediate response, the PETZL MAESTRO offers an efficient solution for accessing and evacuating a victim. The drop loop haul technique allows a rescuer to descend quickly to the victim and perform an upward evacuation with enhanced safety measures once the emergency is under control. While this approach prioritizes speed, it also demands strict adherence to precautions to ensure safety during both descent and hauling operations.

Rapid Descent to the Victim

When urgency dictates, a rescuer may descend on a single rope to address the emergency. However, there are critical precautions to take before initiating the descent:

  1. Minimize Risk of Rope Damage:
    • Assess and mitigate potential rub points or hazards such as rockfall that could compromise the rope’s integrity.
    • Ensure the rope is free of obstructions and wear points along its path.
  2. Maintain Rope Security:
    • Secure the rope’s end at the top anchors to prevent accidental slippage or loss of the rope during operations.
  3. Device-Specific Considerations:
    • While the MAESTRO is not designed as a traditional harness-mounted descender, it can be used in this capacity with caution. Its ergonomics are not optimal for this use, so double-check that the rope is correctly installed in the device.
    • Perform a weight test to ensure the rope locks properly in the device before committing to the descent.

Precautions During Hauling Operations

The upward evacuation phase relies on a two-rope system to achieve a normal level of safety. However, additional considerations ensure a controlled and efficient haul:

  1. Backup with the ASAP:
    • Install an ASAP with an energy absorber (e.g., ASAP’SORBER AXESS) on the haul strand to provide protection in case of rope failure.
  2. Prevent Rope Strand Interference:
    • Avoid rubbing or entanglement between the moving haul strand and the fixed anchor strand by ensuring the ropes follow separate paths.
  3. Weak Point Protection:
    • The rope segment between the MAESTRO and the ASAP is a critical vulnerability. Protect this section with a sliding rope protector to guard against abrasion or sharp edges.
    • For maximum protection, consider placing a second ASAP above the MAESTRO on the haul strand.

While the drop loop haul method is effective for urgent rescues, it is essential to address inherent risks:

  • Proximity to Device Failure Points:
    • If the rope fails near the MAESTRO or the ASAP, the system’s ability to arrest the fall is uncertain. This underscores the importance of proper rope protection and backup measures.
  • Sliding Rope Protection:
    • Implement sliding rope protectors to shield vulnerable sections of the rope from abrasion or contact with sharp surfaces.

By understanding and applying these precautions, rescuers can maximize the efficiency and safety of the drop loop haul technique with the MAESTRO in urgent situations.
