Planning Your Future With Excellence In Rigging

I would like to  impart several lessons about managing a practice rigging exercise (session) that are applicable to all riggers.  By the way, this is the same process we use to film our instructional courses:

  1. Preparation is key. Have a pre exercise (production) meeting to make sure everyone knows what’s happening creatively and logistically. Talk through everything that will appear inside the session and determine

    your equipment needs; and choose the right location, time of day, and crew.

 

  1. Get the hardest systems (“hero systems”) first. Then you can move on to other systems, knowing that your most crucial images are covered.

 

  1. Give yourself options. Always look for ways you can get alternates or varied systems by “looking” through or with different lenses and compositions. You’ll give yourself more options when it’s time for refining your projects.

 

  1. Communicate clearly. Make sure that your crew and talent have what they need so that they can work safely and comfortably. Give clear direction to your team, so they know what they should be doing, and can give you the effectiveness you’re looking for.  

 

  1. Efficiency comes with variations in systems, methods and equipment used. 

 

  1. Experiment and expect to have successful exercises. A true failure rarely if ever happens when steps 1-5 are followed.

 

  1. Vision is always the leading edge. While this is number 7 on this list, it permeates everything you do.  Without vision, nothing will move forward.
