Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue or known are here as DCSAR is an elite group of unpaid professionals who are comprised of the full-time paid staff assigned to the Special Services Unit, seasonal personnel in the Marine and OHV units, and 120+ dedicated volunteers who answer the call any time of day or night. This same group came along us a few years to help recreate an event that has occurred in many a county. A simple lack of awareness and body positioning, on the part of a climber, created this catastrophic event. Despite the 50+’ fall, the patient did survive.
As a side note… I and our film crew got reprimanded twice by DCSAR for not properly being on a rope at the edge (while working). As we all know… ropes are very much a trip hazard and as you’ll see in the video… there are a lot of things going on. One of the tech guys actually got in my face and said they’d walk off the set if didn’t align with their SOPs. This was the right and proper call! After my pride settled down a bit, I thanked them for their professionalism and boundaries.
So once again, we are surrounded by heroes… doing their job irrespective of peer pressure or project. So to Deschutes County Search and Rescue... Kudos and Thank You!
The scope of this video is about awareness, setting up the perimeter, incident command, patient assessment, pre-event planning, and staging. Systems include an Arizona Vortex in a Side A-Frame, 5:1 Mechanical Advantage system with a change of direction. The medics at the bottom perform initial assessments on the unconscious patient and determine the evacuation from there. Air Link is activated.
The cost of saving lives is expensive. Make your training count.
These guys are true heroes; real guys, doing real stuff, in real-time. As mentioned before, this rescue and evac have been modified to exemplify more modern techniques and a “drop everything to save a life” mindset.
